Horror is not one mood. A film for a Halloween party differs from one for a quiet night alone, and a grief-driven slow burn differs from a slasher. So instead of one ranked list, this guide has picks for every type of horror fan.
This week I built six horror recommendation sets, each starting from a different seed film or group of seeds. The recommendation engine ranked the catalogue by similarity to each seed. From the closest matches I kept the four with the highest quality scores, skipping titles I had shown recently and a few that matched on paper but not in tone. Pick the section that sounds like your night and start there.
For Ritual and Daylight Dread
Seeds: The Wicker Man (1973), Midsommar (2019), The Witch (2015), and Apostle (2018). Folk horror trades the dark alley for isolated communities, old beliefs, and fear that happens in plain sight. I shared this set on TikTok.
The Dark and the Wicked (2020) follows two siblings who return to their family's remote Texas farm and face a demonic presence. Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) follows a young woman, played by Elizabeth Olsen, who is traumatized after fleeing a cult commune and struggles to separate memory from the present. Fear Street Part 3: 1666 (2021) traces the origin of the Shadyside curse back to 1666. The First Omen (2024) sends an American nun to a Catholic orphanage in Rome, where she uncovers a conspiracy tied to the birth of the Antichrist.
For a bonus pick, Wake Wood (2011) follows a grieving couple to an Irish village whose rituals can bring the dead back.
For Grief and Slow Dread
Seed: The Babadook (2014), directed by Jennifer Kent. Its horror comes from a parent's exhaustion and loss as much as from the creature, which is why the following picks work as a set. I posted this one on TikTok too.
Lake Mungo (2009) uses a pseudo-documentary format to follow a family after their daughter's drowning, and it gets stranger the more they learn. Birth/rebirth (2023) opens in a morgue, where a technician reanimates a girl's body and bargains with her grieving mother. Relic (2020), starring Emily Mortimer, Robyn Nevin, and Bella Heathcote, follows a woman who returns to her childhood home to care for her ailing mother, and the house itself seems to close in. You Are Not My Mother (2021) follows a young woman whose mother returns from a disappearance unsettlingly changed.
The Hole in the Ground (2019) is the bonus pick, about a woman who suspects her son's disturbing behavior is linked to a mysterious sinkhole.
For Vampires and Social Horror
Seed: Sinners (2025), Ryan Coogler's supernatural horror film set in 1932 in the Mississippi Delta, with Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers. The set pulls from a few directions. I ran this one as a countdown on TikTok.
Shadow of the Vampire (2000) is a fictionalized account of the making of Nosferatu, in which the crew begins to suspect that the lead actor, played by Willem Dafoe, is a real vampire. John Malkovich plays director F. W. Murnau. Bring Her Back (2025) is a Danny and Michael Philippou film, with Sally Hawkins, about step-siblings drawn into an occult ritual by their new foster mother. We Are Still Here (2015) follows grieving parents who move to a rural New England house with a dark history. Get Out (2017) is Jordan Peele's directorial debut, in which a young Black man, played by Daniel Kaluuya, meets his white girlfriend's family and uncovers shocking secrets.
Vampire Circus (1972) is the bonus pick, a Hammer film about a traveling circus whose vampiric performers prey on the children of a 19th-century Serbian village.
For Horror That Knows the Rules
Seed: The Cabin in the Woods (2012). These are horror films that play with the genre's own conventions: The Cabin in the Woods treats the genre's tropes as part of the plot, and His House rebuilds the haunted house around a refugee couple's guilt and survival rather than a standard ghost story.
His House (2020) follows a refugee couple from South Sudan who struggle to adjust to a new life in an English town where something evil lurks. The Evil Dead (1981) is Sam Raimi's feature debut, in which college students in an isolated cabin find an audio tape that releases demonic entities. Triangle (2009) stars Melissa George as a woman on a boating trip who boards a derelict ocean liner with friends, where events begin to repeat. It's What's Inside (2024) is a sci-fi comedy horror about college friends reuniting at a party where a game involving body swaps spins out of control.
Honeymoon (2014) is the bonus pick, Leigh Janiak's debut, about a newlywed couple whose honeymoon is plagued by strange events.
For Dark Comedy and Deadly Games
Seeds: Ready or Not (2019), The Menu (2022), Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022), and Jennifer's Body (2009). These are horror films where surviving is the punchline and the party is the trap.
Cheap Thrills (2014) follows two friends competing in a series of paid challenges set by a rich couple. Game Night (2018), with Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, is a comic mystery about a game night that turns into a real-life kidnapping. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2007) follows a journalist and her crew documenting an aspiring serial killer who models himself on slasher conventions. Blink Twice (2024) is Zoë Kravitz's directorial debut, about guests invited to a billionaire tech mogul's private island.
Eating Raoul (1982) is the bonus pick, Paul Bartel's black comedy about a prudish married couple who kill and rob affluent swingers to fund their dream restaurant.
For Halloween Night Slashers
Seed: Halloween (1978), John Carpenter's slasher template. Directed and scored by Carpenter, it stars Jamie Lee Curtis as babysitter Laurie Strode, stalked by escaped patient Michael Myers, with Donald Pleasence as his psychiatrist. These four fit a Halloween night.
Better Watch Out (2017) is a Christmas-set psychological horror film about a babysitter defending a 12-year-old from intruders, in a home invasion that is not what it first seems. Fear Street Part 1: 1994 (2021) is a supernatural slasher about a teen and her friends facing an evil force that has plagued their town for centuries. The Burning (1981) is a slasher about a burned summer camp caretaker who seeks revenge at a nearby camp, based on the New York legend of Cropsey. Trick 'r Treat (2007) is a Halloween-night anthology of four intersecting stories tied together by a trick-or-treating demon named Sam.
In Fear (2013) is the bonus pick, Jeremy Lovering's film about a young couple terrorized by an unknown assailant on remote country roads.
If you want to see the engine work from your own taste rather than a single seed, that is what the WhatNext. app does. Happy Halloween.
